The Winter season is starting with the Mountain Hares
Last week I took a trip out with a friend to go out looking for Mountains Hares and to photograph them. It didn't take us long to find a few, and with walking around searching we started seeing a lot more. Some are still brown in colour, but a lot are starting to change into there winter coats and we even saw two full white hares.
It's always a fun experience every time I see these guys and watching them for hours with there movements and rather quirky faces is always amusing to watch and to get photo's.
Apart from mountain hares, there were sightings of Red Deer, Ravens, Golden and White-tailed Eagles and Buzzard. There were a pair of eagles doing there courtship flight which I was watching whilst lying on the ground photographing the hares. Out of all the four birds hearing there call and even the ravens mobbing the eagles was a great sight.
Below are a few shots from the day, I did take more but I have yet to go through them all!
In the Summer and nearly all this year I haven't blogged as much as I usually do, due to moving, work and other commitments. Here are some shots of Mountain Hares taken in the Summer.
and on one of the days this was taken - Meadow Pipit, lots were hanging around.

6am start and some nice wildlife sightings
Headed out at 6am this morning for a walk, saw quite a few Roe Deer along the way and then I went to the hide for a bit afterwards.
One of the regular Red Squirrels appeared at the hide nicely for over an hour. There was some good sightings off female Great Spotted Woodpecker on the feeders near the hide, 2 Crested Tit visits, male Greenfinch and other small woodland birds.
Usually, I hear two Cuckoos and saw one quite close to the hide a few weeks ago, but this morning I could hear 3 of them in the area.
A Buzzard appeared which I had good viewings of for around 10mins, which eventually was getting mobbed by a Crow so the bird disappeared over the other side of the forest.
Again, I had my camera on me as per usual and got a few shots from this morning. First one being of the Robin that visits the hide very regularly.
A female Chaffinch flew down to the pool for a drink, obviously I couldn't resist getting a quick shot…

And lastly when driving back. So many vibrant fields at the moment...

A great day photographing Red Squirrels at Neil McIntyre's site
Yes... more squirrels! :)
Me and a friend Wendy, spent the morning photographing Red Squirrels at Neil's site in Aviemore, and not long after we arrived the first squirrel appeared.
The squirrel posed lovely in quite a few different spots for us and stayed for a while giving us a good amount of time to photograph. She was exceedingly cute and a rather cheeky character and sure demands her food lol.
It was quite hard choosing with taking so many images on the day, but here are some of the images...
It was a great morning out, enjoyed by both me and Wendy (she has posted some of her photo's on Twitter, you can find her at - @benjiandblossom) and thanks again to Neil :)

After Neil's, we headed off up to the Cairngorm Mountain so see what wildlife was around. I was hoping for some Snow Buntings as every time I go they never seem to be around, but we were lucky and saw a group of about 10-15 of them. We were attempting to photograph them but they would not stay still, so unfortunately only a record shot.
We headed to the Rothiemurchus Visitor Centre for some lunch after this then to a few more wildlife spots. - Overall a great day out!

A great day up the Mountain for Mountain Hares & a bit of unexpected news!
With the weather not looking too bad I decided to head up the mountain looking for Mountain Hares. I was hoping for a bit of snow to be there and luckily enough there was snow!
It didn't take me too long to spot a few hares about, some were moving away and luckily enough the guy below was quite comfy with my presence and posed rather nicely for about an hour.
The sun kept popping in and out with a slight bit of snow falling that added a nice bit of atmosphere to the image below.
I'll be back photographing these guys in a few weeks and it will be interesting to see any changes in them and there environment.

PS: Had some rather unexpected news on Friday from Outdoor Photography magazine and found out that I won there 'Winter Wildlife' photography competition. It certainly did put a smile on my face and was a nice start to the weekend! The image that won was the top image in this blog post, which was a favourite of mine from the day.
Camera and equipment used on the day: Nikon D800, taken with a 70-300mm zoom lens and a bean bag used.

Red Rocks on the weekend
On Saturday morning just after 8am I decided to quickly drive to the Red Rocks before meeting up with a friend at Sweet Pea Cafe.
The light was particularly nice and I thought I could get a few nice shots as the colours in the sky were good. When I arrived, it was extremely windy and quite hard staying still to take photo's... I only spent a quick 10mins photographing as I didn't have much time left before meeting my friend. By the end of this quick 10mins I couldn't feel my hands and that was even with wearing gloves! so I couldn't get back in the car quick enough to put the warmth on so I could feel them again!
Here are a few of the shots... the first one particularly is my favourite with the sunrise reflecting onto the green.
